It is important that you check your eligibility to apply to become a driving instructor before beginning the process. Not everyone qualifies, and it's better to know early.
We recommend that you take the official mini test to see if you can become a driving instructor. The test will inform you on the next steps to become an ADI.
Important: You must have held a full UK or EU driving licence for at least 3 years and have no more than 6 penalty points.

Your first step towards joining the ADI register.
First, you will need to apply to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to be an ADI.
You will need to provide:

After you have been accepted to start the qualifying process, you will officially begin your training journey. You must pass all three tests in order, within a two-year period.
A multiple-choice test and hazard perception video test. You must pass this before moving on to Part 2. We provide theory support and study materials to help you prepare.
An advanced driving test to demonstrate your ability to drive to a very high standard. Eyesight check, vehicle safety questions, and about 1 hour of driving.
The final test assesses your ability to teach. An examiner will watch you give a driving lesson to a real pupil. Pass this, and you can join the ADI register.
